Charles Tarlton: The Cowboy and the Gambler

Charles Tarlton: The Cowboy and the Gambler

GAMBLER

(to farmer)

It’s to you. Can you open?

The farmer picks up his cards, looks through them, and studies his situation.

FARMER

Open for ten.

Everybody antes up round the table. Gambler and his associates are all smiles and nods.

GAMBLER

(to farmer)

Cards?

FARMER

Two.

The Gambler deals two cards and then looks around the table, but everyone else is standing pat.

GAMBLER

Dealer takes three.

(to farmer)

Your bet.

The Farmer is visibly excited and nervous. He fingers fumble a little with the chips. He pushes out a few.

FARMER

Fifty?

GAMBLER

Is it fifty or what?

FARMER

Fifty.

The Gambler now carefully studies his cards, looking them over again and again.

GAMBLER

Okay. See your fifty, and raise

you three hundred.

FARMER

Three hundred? I don’t have

three hundred.

GAMBLER

(reaching to pull in

the chips)

This is poker, I’m afraid.

FARMER

Let me see those cards!
